Swimming Pool Work, Abilene State Park, 1935

In 1935, the CCC returned to the park to do more work. The company number remained 1823, but it bore a CV suffix, signifying that the enrollees were all African American veterans. In the intervening year since that company's departure, CCC companies had been segregated. Company 1823(CV) was charged with finishing the work at the park and replacing some of the original design materials. Seen here working on a section behind the diving board, the men have removed the flagstone paving around the pool and are replacing it with concrete. The man standing beside them may be a LEM (local experienced man) whom the CCC hired to teach enrollees craft skills and to provide oversight at construction sites. Note the swimmers prepared to enjoy the newly opened pool.
