The Goose Island Oak Tree, Goose Island State Park, c. 2000

One of the unique features of the park is the Big Tree, a tree that has been, and still is, known by several names including the Mighty Oak (CCC name), the Bishop's Tree, the Goose Island Oak, the Lamar Oak, and simply Big Tree. Estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, it is the largest in Texas and thought to be one of the largest live oaks in the country. It is not the tallest live oak, but makes up for its lack of height in the girth of its trunk and the spread of its canopy.
