Henry Trees Oral History

During the 1930s, Henry Trees worked at Garner State Park and eventually held positions of responsibility. On July 10, 2003, a TPWD interviewer talked with Trees about the processing of timber. Trees explains how the timber, some of it cypress from nearby Utopia, Texas, came to the sawmill at the Garner camp where it was hewed to become the lumber, beams, and lintels used in the park buildings. Trees himself supervised ten men who worked with foot adzes to smooth the heavy timber.
