Refectory, Palmetto State Park, c. 1937

The NPS design preference for park buildings that blended with the surrounding landscape met unparalleled success in the refectory at Palmetto State Park. The walls of this low structure seem to rise from tumbled stones at its base. The thatched fronds on the steep roof echo the wisps of moss hanging from the trees. The boundaries between the natural and the built worlds are blurred.
